Katia Escalera, soprano, has won critical acclaim throughout Europe, USA and South America. Her latest achievements include two CD recordings of the newly found Bolivian Baroque Music of the Jesuit Missions in the Bolivian Amazons as soloist with European Baroque ensemble Florilegium recorded by Channel Classics. One of her arias “In hac mensa” has been nominated in Editor’s Choice of Gramophon Magazine in 2005. Escalera continues to perform this repertoire mostly across Europe, including Wigmore Hall of London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Musikverein of Vienna.
She recently debuted in Teatro ColĂłn of Buenos Aires, Argentina as Viclinda in I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata under the baton of Maestro Bonynge, and returned as Gerhilde in Wagner’s Die WalkĂĽre with Maestro Charles Dutoit. Escalera has performed roles such as Nancy in Albert Herring, Diana and Giove-in-Diana in Cavalli’s La Calisto with the San Francisco Opera Center Showcase, LiĂą in Turandot, the title role of Manon Lescaut (cover) in Teatro ColĂłn, Carmen title role, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Karolka in Jenůfa, Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von NĂĽrnberg (cover), Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier (cover), Valencienne in The Merry Widow (cover), Laura in Luisa Miller, Glaša in Kat’a Kabanova in the San Francisco Opera House and Zerlina in Don Giovanni with the Western Opera Theatre Tour.
Important Oratorio presentations include Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Fauré’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Verdi’s Requiem, Szymanowsky’s Stabat Mater, and Vivaldi’s Gloria, amongst others. In 2005, she sang and recorded the World Premiere concerts of Solombra in San Jose, CA, a modern composition by Janis Mattox for voice, piano, violin, and cello based on poetry in Portuguese by Cecilia Mireilhes.
Escalera began her musical studies in Instituto “Eduardo Laredo” in Cochabamba, Bolivia; she holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Literature from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, USA. She was Merolini, Western Opera Theatre Tour participant (1999) and Adler Fellow, resident of San Francisco Opera in CA, USA (2000-01).
