Shawn Thuris
Shawn Thuris
tenor

“Mr. Thuris’ voice is very powerful and I like it very much.”

—Ib Melchior

Shawn Thuris brings to the performance of opera, art song and oratorio a rich spectrum of vocal colors, powerful high notes, a strong lower range, clear diction in eight languages, and a complex dramatic involvement.

On the operatic stage, he was seen in October as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Center Stage Opera of Northridge, and in August as Spoletta in Tosca with Redlands Bowl Summer Festival. He appears this October in the title role of Hoffmann in Les contes d'Hoffmann for Repertory Opera of Los Angeles.  He has also performed the role of Alfredo in La traviata.

In oratorio, his recent performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem with Westwood Chamber Orchestra was received with enthusiasm. He is tenor soloist with Westwood Presbyterian Church, where he will be featured in upcoming performances of Handel's Messiah and Mendelssohn's Elijah.

He is best known for his performance of dramatic tenor repertoire. He recently sang excerpts from Die Walkuere as Siegmund with Maestro Henri Venanzi in the "Informally Yours" series for the Orange County Performing Arts Center. His "Tribute to Lauritz Melchior" with orchestra in 2003 showed his affinity for the heavier repertoire of Wagner and Verdi, with extended excerpts from Otello, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger and Siegfried.

He has given recitals in a number of venues. This fall he sang Schumann's "Dichterliebe" and songs of Richard Strauss with pianist Christopher Luthi in Glendale, CA, and performed a multi-language recital with Dr. Dennis Boe at East Central University of Oklahoma under a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council. Among several recitals planned for the upcoming concert season will be his second collaboration with renowned pianist Kirill Gliadkovsky.

Conductors with whom he has performed include Sean Bradley, Frank Fetta, John-Kevin Hilbert, Mark Hilt, Anne Marie Ketchum, Kent Kornmeyer, Kristy Lobitz, Kevin McKeown and James E. Smith. He has coached with pianists such as Galina Barskaya, Dennis Boe, Kirill Gliadkovsky, David Goodman, Gary Gray, Mona Lands, Christopher Luthi, Lisa Sylvester and Henri Venanzi.
