Born near Perth, Scotland, Stuart PATTERSON first studied singing with Winifred BUSFIELD in Glasgow and was a member of the Choir of Paisley Abbey. He sang sacred music such as Handel's Messiah and Solomon, Leighton's Columba Mea, Bach's Saint Matthew Passion and DeLalande's De Profundis, before studying with Noëmie PERUGIA in Paris on a French government scholarship. He subsequently studied singing with David POLLARD in London, Claudio DESDERI in Florence and latterly, Peggy BOUVERET in Paris.

After two seasons in the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus, Stuart settled in France in 1985. His roles there have been diverse, including Gounod's Mireille (Vincent), Milhaud's Le Pauvre Matelot (at the Opéra Comique), Britten's The Little Sweep (in Lille, under Jean-Claude Malgoire), and Stravinsky's Renard (Le Coq) at Aix-en-Provence. He also has sung Acis and Galatea (Damon) in Messina, Sicily, Anna Bolena (Sir Hervey) in Nîmes, Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Pedrillo) in Massy, Zaïde (Gomatz) in Paris , and at Nanterre in 1999, the French première of Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies's The Lighthouse.

His introduction to Mozartian opera come after studying with the distinguished Italian baritone and conductor, Claudio DESDERI. In theatres such as Modena, Pisa, Alessandria, Florence and Ferrara, Stuart sang, with M° Desderi conducting, Ferrando, (Cosi fan tutte), Ottavio (Don Giovanni), and Basilio/Curzio (Le Nozze di Figaro). Later, as a member of the troupe in Pisa Opera House until 1996, he was Ramiro in Rossini's La Cenerentola, Valletto/Lucano/Soldato in L'incoronazione di Poppea, and Ulisse in the opera of that name by

Monteverdi, Remendado in Bizet's Carmen.

For the season 1999-2000 Stuart Patterson had two engagements at the Teatro Regio di Torino where he sang Sellem in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, and Vater Mignon in Penderecki's Die Teufel von Loudun. He then appeared at the Théâtre National de la Colline, Paris, in a production of Brecht's La Vie de GalilĂ©e in the role of the street singer, performing music by Hans Eisler. He also made his dĂ©but at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, and the following year in Lausanne in Shostakovitch's The Nose. In February 2001 he sang three one-act operas, l'Occasione fa il ladro, Il Signor Bruschino, and  La Scala di Seta by Rossini at the OpĂ©ra Comique in Paris, under M° Desderi.

In 2003 he was in Palermo to sing the role of a Gangster in the Broadway musical Kiss me Kate by Cole Porter, under the direction of Donato Renzetti, then in Corsica for the title rôle in Glück’s L’Ivrogne Corrigé. More recently, at the Opéra de Besançon, he sang the Steuermann in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer, and in Lausanne, Gherardo in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, under Corrado Rovaris. Again more recently, in April 2005, he sang Mime in Siegfried at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, which was recorded for television, under the direction of Guido-Maria Guida.

Future engagements include Le Nozze di Figaro, Zauberflöte, Stravinsky's Renard, Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis, and a contemporary opera by Philippe Fénelon, Le Chevalier Imaginaire, for Radio France.

When not performing opera, Stuart still leads a busy cocnert life in works like Britten's Saint Nicholas, Berlioz's l'Enfance du Christ, Bach and Handel.
