GLADYS  MAYO

Gladys Mayo was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She showed an interest in the performing arts at an early stage and began studying piano with Bruno Gelber and Anna T Gelber. She studied singing at the Art High School of the well known Colon Theater from where she graduated with full honours. During her studies she was first prize-winner in the first Latin American Youth Music Festival.
She had her operatic debut as Norina in Donizetti’s Don Paquale at the Colon Theater, where she performed several other roles as well such as Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Lucietta in Wolf-Ferrari’s Il Campiello.
A personal recommendation made by Mr. Huges Gaal, Director of the Paris Opera, for her to continue her career either at the Scala Theater in Milan or at the Metropolitan in New York, marked her departure from Buenos Aires and her beginning of an international career.
She moved to Italy where she attended master classes directed by Maestro Ettore Campogalliani.
In 1982 she came to worldwide attention with her triunphal debut in La Fenice Theater in the role of Konstanze in Mozart’s Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, conducted by Peter Maag and directed by G. Strehler. For this extraordinary performance she received outstanding reviews and a live record was produced by Mondo Musica. Since then she has been invited to sing this role in many opportunities in Italy and Germany, including the San Carlo Theater, Comunale di Bologna Theater, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara and Kaiserslautern.
She has perfomed at most of Italy’s premier venues. Her roles have included Fiorilla in Il turco in Italia, conducted by M. Panni at the Roma Opera House , Dea Constanza in Il Sogno di Scipione, conducted by C. Hogwood at the Vicenza Olimpico Theater, Orphee aus Enfer conducted by G. Gelmetti at La Fenice and San Carlo Theaters, La Rondine conducted by G. Gavazzeni at La Scala in Milan.
She has been invited to sing in major international opera houses as well. In Budapest she sang title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Erkel Theater, in Prague as Argene in Myslivecek’s Il Bellerofonte, conducted by Z. Pesko. A record of this performance was produced by Supraphon.
At The New Israeli Opera she has performed as Olympia, Rosina, Adina, Norina, Clorinda and the Queen of the Night. In Peru she appeared as Musetta, Maria in La Figlia del Regimento, Adina, Norina & Micaela. In Canada she sang Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni.
During her extensive career she has worked also with great conductors such as A. Zedda, G. Pretre, M. Soustrot, F. Chaslin, M. Armiliato, A. Fish, H Graf, Y. Talmi.
