He was born in Lisbon, beginning its musical studies at Gregorian Institute of Lisbon. In 2001, he finished his singing studies at the Conservatorio Nacional de Lisboa in the class of Filomena Amaro. In 2005, he has finished his singing studies in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, in the class of Pierre Mak.
He have attended summer courses with João Lourenço and Claire Vangelisti (Austin University), Peter Harrison, Richard Miller, Noelle Barker, Peter Harvey and Jill Feldman (Early Music). In opera, he was coached by David Bollen, Sandy Oliver and Claron McFadden.
Since 2002, he worked, in some european prestigious ensembles: Collegium Vocale Gent (Phillippe Herreweghe), Consort Vocale Berlin (René Jacobs) and Nederlands Kamerkoor.
As a soloist, João sang in “Coro” of L. Berio integrated in the Gulbenkian Modern Music Festival and in Concertgebouw with GOK; with the ensemble “Segréis de Lisboa”, he performed at the “Centre Culturel Gulbenkian” in Paris(1999) and in India (2001). He have sung "L'Enfance du Christ" by H. Berlioz with Beiras Orchestra (2003), A. Cartageno's "premiere" - "Cantata for Tenor and Orchestra", in Portugal (2004/05).
In Holland, João sang “Messiah” – G.F. Händel, "Magnificat" - J.S.Bach, "Jephte" – G. Carissimi, S. Lukas Passion – G.P. Telemann, "Dichterliebe" – R. Schumann, "Requiem" - F. Lizst and Cantatas by J.S. Bach, J.C. Bach and J.C. Graupner. He recorded a Cd of G.P. Telemann Cantatas with Klaus Mertens for the label Accent. With Vox Luminis, he recorded "Stabat Mater" of D. Scarlatti to the label Ricercar. João sang in Concertgebouw with Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam conducted by Harry van der Kamp. He was "Evangelist" in Hugo Distler's Passion and, conducted by Rob Vermeulen, in St. John’s Passion of J.S.Bach.
In opera, he was a guest singer in De Nieuwe Opera Academy (Amsterdam, 2003).
He was Don Ottavio (Utrecht, 2004); Acis in "Acis and Galatea" by G.F. Händel (Amsterdam, 2005), “Bastien” in the Mozart’s opera “Bastien und Bastienne”(Amsterdam, 2006), “Don Basilio” and “Don Curzio” in “Le Nozze di Figaro” (Portugal, 2006). In 2007, he will be “Begonia” in a new opera in Porto, in September and in December in Lisbon.
