Linette van der Merwe has been since 1992 a lecturer at the Department of Afrikaans, University of Pretoria. In 1997 she obtains her M. A. degree entitled The treatment of citations in HAT3 (1994). This study emphasise that the needed requirements are not fully met by the third edition of the Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (1994), especially with regard to the use of citations as illustrative material. The treatment of citations in HAT3 is criticised on the basis of findings in metalexicography, literary criticism and the semiotics as well as on the basis of the results of a frequency study and a questionnaire. The main gain of this research was that it extends across the traditional boundaries between Literature and Grammar.

Linette lectured Media Literacy and Communication, Media and Identity, Afrikaans Literature, Academic Skills and Language Proficiency in Afrikaans and English, as well as Project Communication and Business Communication for the Department of Landscape and Architecture. Since 2003 Linette is lecturing on a contract basis at UP, Unit for Language Skills and Development, the Tshwane University of Technology and at the British International College since 2004. Her interest lies especially in theories of semiotics, cinematography, script writing, editing, and analysing the media, academic literacy and communication theories. Linette also did translation and editing for Education Link among other in 2003, especially from English to Afrikaans. She is frequently asked by various professional institutions to do editing and/or translating. Linette also work as a journalist on a freelance basis.

Since August 2000 she is the project manager of the Afrikaans Expo for Learners, which involve marketing of the project, organising the national exhibition and prize giving event, writing press releases, fund raising, organising work shops for teachers and learners country wide, give public performances and workshops at schools and other relevant educational institutions.

Besides her academic activities she is a professional performing artist by doing freelance singing and debut in 1999 as mezzo soloist with the Bach Choir of Johannesburg and the National Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the Messiah (Händel). She performs regularly with Opera Africa, Pro Musica, Salon Music and sang the role of Alicia in Lucia di Lammermoor (Donizetti) in 2002. She was also seen in 2003 at the Klein Karoo Kunstefees with Divas in Duet, the Rossini Stabat Mater, and is frequently seen in Montpellier-Opera concerts in Johannesburg. In 2004 Linette was seen in two shows at the KKNK and in the role of Flora Bervoix in La Traviata (Verdi) for Opera Africa and in 2005 as Giovanna in Rigoletto (Verdi).
